Road saddle Vršič 1 611 m above sea level connecting the villages of Boveč and Kranjska Gora. A wide marked road leads from the saddle.
Unbelievable crowds of people, cars and motorbikes in the road saddle Vrsic scared us a lot. The idea of going in the mountains again among hundreds of people did not appeal to us at all. Fortunately, the vast majority of the car tourists stayed in the road saddle and only quite a few people went up Vršič mountain. Since the saddle was littered with cars and motorbikes, we had to leave our car about 400 meters below the saddle along the road.
From the car we returned to the Vršič saddle. There, besides about a million people, we were welcomed by sheep enjoying the company of people. From the saddle we continued along the red marker to the Tičarjev dom hut on Vršič. We continued on along a wide path that climbed gently. Soon we came to the remains of a concrete bunker, from which there are beautiful views of the Julian Alps. After a short rest, we continued along the wide path to the Poštarski dom hut on Vršič. As it was lunch time we also took advantage of the hospitality of this hut and had a meal. Then we ran up the trail to the top of Vršič 1 737 m above sea level.
The views of the surrounding rock peaks are beautiful. After a short rest we returned to the hut and continued northwards along the red trail. The road leads through a magical landscape and begins to descend in serpentines. At one break in the road we turned onto a forest trail. After that, we began to head back towards the road. We joined a wide forest path and reached back to the cars at the Vršič saddle.
A cool trek to a beautiful scenic mountain. The ascent is facilitated by the Vršič road saddle, which makes the total elevation gain minimal. Mostly it is on wide comfortable paths. On the descent back down, you follow a forest trail. Everything is clearly visible, there is no problem with orientation. The hike is suitable for children or dogs.
Although the trail is very short, there are two mountain huts on the trail, so it is not necessary to have a large supply of water. 0.5 litres per person is enough.
From the saddle Vršič 1 737 m above sea level there is a great view of the surrounding mountains of the Julian Alps, e.g. Velika Mojstrovka or Prisank.
This is a very simple trip. Most of the route is on wide roads. There is a narrow trail to the top only. The peak itself offers a place to rest, there are no exposed places.
There are two huts on the route - Tičarjev dom na Vršiču and Poštarski dom na Vršiču, where you can eat. We used the second one.
The Vršič Saddle 1 611 m above sea level is the highest road saddle in Slovenia. It connects the villages of Kranjska Gora and Bovec. There are 50 serpentines leading to the saddle, each with its own number. The road was built by Russian prisoners of war, who have their own chapel and cemetery not far from the saddle. It also commemorates the tragedy of 1916, when the prisoner of war camp was buried by an avalanche. The Vršič saddle is an ideal starting point for hikes to the surrounding rock peaks.
