The Schneeberg and Raxalpe plateaus are located in Austria in the Federal Republic of Lower Austria and belong to the Northern Limestone Alps. Schneeberg is only 70 km from Vienna. The two mountain ranges are separated by the deep valley of the Schwarza river. The highest mountains Klosterwappen 2,076 m above sea level (the highest mountain of the Schneeberg) and Heukuppe 2,007 m above sea level (the highest mountain of the Raxalpe) are the first two-thousand peaks west of Vienna and therefore these areas are a frequent destination for tourists from both Vienna and the Czech Republic.
A narrow-gauge railway has been built in the Schneeberg massif up to 1795 m above sea level, which makes the climb up the mountain accessible for families with children. A dense network of mountain huts also contributes to the attractiveness of the mountain. The Raxalpe mountain range offers more than 20 secured paths, for which the names kletterstteig (German) or via ferrata (Italian) have been adopted.
