The Retezat Mountains (Retezat in Romanian) are the third highest mountain range in Romania. The main ridge is about 20 kilometres long and the highest mountain of the mountain range, Peleaga 2 509 m above sea level, is located here. The mountain range is very rich in lakes, with about 80 lakes, the most of any Romanian mountain.
In the forests of Retezat it is also possible to meet large carnivores, such as the bear. The mountain is quite popular with tourists. In the western part of the mountain there is a National Park, here bivouacking is only allowed in designated places.
