Mountains Novohrad Mountains

The Novohradské Mountains (Gratzen Mountains) are located in the southeastern corner of South Bohemia and extend into Austria. The mountains cover about 162 square kilometres of Czech territory and belong to the supercontinuous system of the Šumava Upland.

In Austrian territory the Novohradské hory are called Freiwald. The highest mountain is Viehberg (1 112 m above sea level) located in Austria. On the Czech part of the mountain range, the highest mountain is Kamenec (1 072 m above sea level), which is located in close proximity (about 400 m) to the Austrian border. Thanks to the former border zone, the Novohradské Mountains have been spared from major alterations or logging. Thus, we can observe untouched meadows, peat bogs, wetlands and many small ponds, which form a characteristic feature of the Novohradské hory.
