The Nockberge is a grouping of several separate mountain ranges. It is located south of the main Alpine ridge. They are mostly grassy and resemble Slovak mountains. There are several important lakes in the mountains, which are often used for recreation. A large part of the area was designated the Nockberge National Park in 1986.
Important towns of the Federal Republic of Carinthia, such as Villach and Klagenfurt, are located near the mountains. The highest mountain range is the Gurktaler Alpen. This mountain range is almost deserted, ideal for relaxed wanderings through the beautiful Alpine countryside. The highest peak of the entire mountain range, Grosser Rosenock 2,440 m above sea level, is located here.
