The Hrubý Jeseník Mountains are located in the heart of the Jeseníky Mountains, which geomorphologically belong to the Krkonoše-Jesenice subprovince. The highest mountain of Hrubý Jeseník, as well as the whole Jeseníky Mountains, is Praděd (1 491 m above sea level).
The Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area covers an area of 740 square kilometres and is divided into 4 national nature reserves (Praděd, Šerák - Keprník, Rejvíz, Peat Bog Skřítek). The Society of Friends of the Jeseníky Mountains has been trying for a long time to establish the Jeseníky National Park, which would bring a higher degree of nature protection to the North Moravian mountains. The forests of Hrubý Jeseník are mainly composed of hornbeams, beeches and sometimes preserved remnants of natural forests. The main streams flowing into the Hrubý Jeseník include the Opava, Desná and Bělá.
