The Banat Mountains (Munții Banatului in Romanian) are a relatively low but magical mountain range. The highest mountain, Semenic, is only 1 444 m above sea level. The mountain range is divided into several separate units. The mountains are largely made up of karst plateaus. There are also several important cave systems or deep gorges in the Banat.
For Czech tourists, however, the Banat is important because of its history. Several Czech villages were founded in the Banat region two hundred years ago. Six of them have been preserved to this day. The largest of them is called Gernik. St. Helena is also well known. The villages have preserved their customs and dialect and are a frequent destination for Czech tourists.
